Installation Guide: Brick Foundation (Stoep)

This document outlines the standard procedure for constructing a durable brick foundation (stoep) for a tombstone installation.

1. Required Materials and Tools

Before beginning construction, gather the following supplies:

A. Materials

  • Lintels (3)

  • Concrete Mix (6 bags)

  • Building Mix (2 bags)

  • Face Bricks (90 units, sufficient for 3 layers)

  • Sandstone Bricks (30 units, sufficient for 2 layers)

  • Builders Mesh (as required)

  • Water

B. Tools

  • Shovel

  • Trowel

  • Float

  • Wheelbarrow or Bucket

  • Builder’s Square

  • Measuring Tape

  • Spirit Level

  • Builders Line

  • Pegs (for builders line)

2. Installation Procedure

Follow these steps precisely to ensure a stable and level foundation.

Step 1: Excavate the Foundation Area

  • Dig out the sides of the grave according to the required dimensions for the foundation.

Step 2: Excavate the Foundation Area

  • Put 3 lintels across the grave.

  • Try to get them as level as possible as this will help when you start building with the bricks.

  • We recommend using a spirit level to get it level.

Step 3: Filling

  • Fill in the sides that were dug out with rocks or a concrete mix.

Step 4: Brick Laying

  • Lay the bricks on the foundation.

  • Ensure the base is square and level.

  • Use string lines to keep each row of bricks straight and properly aligned.

Step 5:

  • If your stoep or slab is not exactly the same size as the tombstone, fill the inside with concrete and include builder’s mesh for extra strength.

  • Use a spirit level to make sure the surface is perfectly level.
