Installation Guide: Brick Foundation (Stoep)
This document outlines the standard procedure for constructing a durable brick foundation (stoep) for a tombstone installation.
1. Required Materials and Tools
Before beginning construction, gather the following supplies:
A. Materials
Lintels (3)
Concrete Mix (6 bags)
Building Mix (2 bags)
Face Bricks (90 units, sufficient for 3 layers)
Sandstone Bricks (30 units, sufficient for 2 layers)
Builders Mesh (as required)
Water
B. Tools
Shovel
Trowel
Float
Wheelbarrow or Bucket
Builder’s Square
Measuring Tape
Spirit Level
Builders Line
Pegs (for builders line)
2. Installation Procedure
Follow these steps precisely to ensure a stable and level foundation.
Step 1: Excavate the Foundation Area
Dig out the sides of the grave according to the required dimensions for the foundation.

Step 2: Excavate the Foundation Area
Put 3 lintels across the grave.
Try to get them as level as possible as this will help when you start building with the bricks.
We recommend using a spirit level to get it level.

Step 3: Filling
Fill in the sides that were dug out with rocks or a concrete mix.

Step 4: Brick Laying
Lay the bricks on the foundation.
Ensure the base is square and level.
Use string lines to keep each row of bricks straight and properly aligned.

Step 5:
If your stoep or slab is not exactly the same size as the tombstone, fill the inside with concrete and include builder’s mesh for extra strength.
Use a spirit level to make sure the surface is perfectly level.
